Indiana state Sen. Mike Bohacek (R) announced he is working on a medical cannabis legalization proposal for the state’s next legislative session, which is in 2027.
The Republican from Michiana Shores did not share specifics of his proposal, only noting that it would legalize medical cannabis, establish a regulated medical cannabis industry, and set parameters for patient participation in the program.
The announcement comes in the weeks after the federal government rescheduled state-legal medical cannabis from Schedule I to Schedule III, and after Indiana Gov. Mike Braun (R) expressed support for medical cannabis reforms in the state.
“In light of the governor’s openness to consider legislation regarding the legalization of marijuana, we need to consider a feasible marijuana policy that would be the most helpful to Hoosiers and the economy. The use of medical marijuana has been proven to be beneficial for some medical disorders and could help people throughout the state who are suffering find some relief.” — Bohacek, in a press release
Bohacek also specified that the proposal “would not legalize the use of recreational marijuana” and that many of the state’s current laws regarding cannabis “would remain in place.”
“This is why I am also working on legislation that would adjust the state impairment laws for those who would use medical marijuana,” he said in the release.
