Recreational marijuana is continuing to raise big money for the Buckeye State, with new data showing sales have topped $1 billion since legal purchases began in August of 2024.According to the Ohio Department of Cannabis Control, Ohioans have spent nearly $1.1 billion on recreational marijuana, with more than $836 million of that spent in 2025.According to DCC sales records obtained by WCMH in Columbus, Ohioans purchased nearly $70 million in recreational cannabis each month.Ohio voters legalized recreational marijuana through a public ballot initiative that passed in November of 2023.Ohio’s recreational marijuana sales could look slightly different in 2026, however, due to a bill signed by Gov. Mike DeWine that makes changes to the state’s laws on marijuana and intoxicating hemp.The bill maintained federal interstate commerce restrictions, making it illegal to transport marijuana across state lines, regardless of its legal status in other states.
